Bummed that your event got cancelled? Do it anyway!
AirLine buddy Dylan Howley was signed up to attempt his first half-IronMan this past weekend, which was unfortunately cancelled due to the 'VID. He's never been one to back down from a challenge, so he completed it on his own... that's a 1.2 mile swim, a mile bike, and a 13.1 mile run, on his own. ON HIS OWN! No support tents, no food stops, no cheering crowds.
When in doubt, be epic. Congratulations Dylan!
Look for more on this story in the newspaper this weekend... ...

When I was first trying to open AirLine Cycles, I applied for a business loan, but I was denied. Maybe it was because I didn't have a business degree. Maybe it was because opening a bike shop in a small town was incredibly risky. Maybe it was because of my big dumb goatee. There were dozens of potential reasons that ran through my head, but not once did I ever wonder if I didn't get the loan because of my skin color.
To me, the phrase "white privilege" always meant trust funds, fancy cars, country clubs, and getting cushy jobs through family connections... But it's not that. It doesn't mean i didn't work my ass off... It just means that skin color wasn't one of the things that made life hard for me.
I hate the idea of posting this, for fear that I look like another soapbox poster, fighting for social justice safely behind a keyboard... but I learned something over the past few days, and maybe, just maybe, my explanation might help someone else think a little differently today. ...
My business story is similar to yours, minus the “big dumb goatee”. Never even thought about my skin color as a reason for any struggle in growing my business. It’s time to become aware and learn. Open our eyes and ears.
No one gave me a business loan right away either. Thank goodness I had a lot of friends who believed in me and was able to do much on credit with them and customers came to support me. It was very tough and very scary but I have never been this uncertain in my life. I knew I would always succeed because I was in charge of my own business but not so much now. Who is in charge now? And no I agree never ever did I think I didnt get it because of my race etc.
I think we only have our personal perspectives to share and the more we do that with honesty and empathy, the further down the road we will get. Thanks for posting this, buddy. I miss seeing you. Keep being awesome in your little community!
I’m glad you got on the soap box for a minute. That was a great explanation, worded in a way that everyone can understand.
Well said my friend!!
THANK YOU!!! This is really important to share and continue to explain. I had this very conversation (again) with someone near and dear to me yesterday. And - I think I got through this time, with a very similar explanation. Love you Holdty.
Your a great guy Brian. Never be fearful of being great. 👍
Thank you for sharing your important message. I don't see it as "another soapbox poster" but authentic self awareness that might influence others to be more aware of their understanding of privilege.
Me too, I understand why... Thanks Brian for posting this. I watched a great Trevor Noah episode that really made me see and understand white privilege.
Well said and thank you for speaking out and sharing. I know I have been way to silent for way to long.
This is exactly why a lot of people don't understand white privilege. I appreciate you writing this
Good post. I think we all need to go out on a limb a little more like you just did
Thank you, Brian. Hope to stop in to the shop soon.
Thanks for posting this and for everything you do for our town.
Well said, as always!
100%. So glad you posted this!
Thank you for posting this.
More like bike wizard goatee.

If I'm going to get to the shop 3.5 hours before opening, you better believe I'm getting breffast. Thanks again to Sweet Jean’s Cafe for this seriously epic breffast sammich.
I caught some flack for the empty test picture last week, so here's a better view. Note that the heaping portion of tater tots might have shrunken during the drive. Also note that Sweet Jean's is twelve piping hot tots north of the shop on North Main Street. And for the record, please note that I have started a movement that tater tots become an internationally recognized unit of measure.
Shop is open 10-4 today. If you have a bike shop brand mountain bike or hybrid that is not being used, bring it down and we'll give you cash or store credit. Thanks! ...
Oohhhh....I know what I’m having for breakfast now! Also, Julien’s brakes are acting sus, so we need to drop off his bike.
perhaps you should pay people in "tots" for used bikes!
Thank you so much for riding your bike the 8 tots to Dexter's with such beautiful flowers for our reimagining day!😽
I had the spicy breakfast sandwich special this morning and it was amazing
Oooo...tater tots 🥰
....so..."All that & a bag of chips" is over and done? "Tough as Taters" it is!
it looks good - enjoy the start to your day
I could do a century of tots...not even 😓
Tater tots are no joke!! Yummmmm. Enjoy!
One of my favorite things in the world is that at PlanB burger I can get tater tots tossed in truffle oil.
I love me a good breffest sammich!

So the packages I hoped to get last Friday and Tuesday were delivered today... fourteen in total. If you're waiting on parts, please understand that shipping delays are an unfortunate reality right now. We'll hopefully see the rest of our packages tomorrow, because the shelves are looking pretty bare in a few spots.
We continue to crank through repairs, and used bikes are selling as fast as they roll through the door. Busy times, folks... hope you're all getting in some good miles! ...
... And just for the record, I know the UPS drivers are working their asses off right now. My awesome driver and I compare notes each day to see who is working longer days, and it is always a toss up, and always in the 12-13 hour range for both of us. Every step of the process is longer and more complicated these days, and I really do appreciate the warehouse folks, the tractor trailer drivers, the sorters, and the drivers. It just frustrates me to not be able to get the products I need, which then delays the repairs. Gotta keep folks on two wheels!!
I want to apologize for my input and photo that i had added to this thread. Apparently it had been read and taken completely the wrong way. I was not making a joke nor was I bashing or shaming our UPS driver I was merely confused at why our package was late and the box quite damaged. I fully understand that they are extremely short staffed and overwork. We've never received a box so late and so damaged so I was just confused as to why but your thread here gave me some answers and insight. I was just posting adding my input as well as adding a photo of our package not to bash or shame the UPS or the driver. So I apologize if any others here read my input the wrong way. again it was never meant to be mean hearted ...i deleted my original input and photo
I'm waiting and waiting for pkgs.
“Crank” through repairs! Lol
I had the same issue..
Keep cranking brutha!
Ladies and gentlemen, please take a moment and inspect your rack. Make sure those straps are tight, hooks are secure, and that there are no signs of wear or failure. These bikes are incredibly strong and durable, but being run over by three cars is unfortunately not covered by the warranty.
Status update: we continue to crank through repairs as efficiently as possible. New and used bikes are pretty scarce at the moment; in the under $1000 category, we only have a few hybrids and mountain bikes left, mostly in the XS and small varieties. We are always looking for bike shop quality used bikes - trader them in for store credit, towards a different bike, or get cash in hand!
Store hours are the same as normal, but make and social distancing are appreciated when possible. ...
No honest I was on the Airline Trail, just shifted up into 3rd gear and I heard a “creak”.
Also, you are responsible for the damage something falling off your car creates.
Should always shake test a bike before leaving
Interested in a Lemond road bike ?
“Light enough to style yet strong enough to pile!”
Good news bad news everybody:
The bad news is that the AirLine Trail is still closed for repairs (Cranberry Bog to Bull Hill Road) the US is basically sold out of bikes, and there is a global pandemic. (Still a good supply of bikes in the store though!)
The good news is that it's a beautiful day, things are looking up, and the new restaurant in town Sweet Jean’s Cafe makes a damn fine breakfast sandwich with tater tots. I took a picture of it to remember it by. Their chicken parm grinder is also quite excellent. Welcome to town, Sweet Jean, and welcome to my belly, bacon egg and cheese sandwich with tater tots! ...
Thank you AirLine Cycles for the support!
Looks like this was not the year for me to buy a bike 😂😂
Sounds like I have to take a drive to check in..
Where is the airline trail closed? In East Hampton? I rode from Lebanon to Portland last week and it was open, though the wet, unfinished section between EH and Portland isn’t fun.
I guess business has been good! The sandwich sounds delicious
Bummer. Wanted to stop by this weekend to look into buying a bike!
Did you at least share with Plow King? Lol
Maybe airline could get into the manufacturing business.......?! Plenty of buildings over there
Ruth Butler not sure if you were able to find bikes yet but this place still has some👍🏼
That looked so good
Everest update: Congratulations to all the Stage 1 mountain climbers! We had several riders "summit" Everest, climbing over 29,029' in a single day. They rode up and down a 1.15 mile stretch of road for up to 17 hours, accumulating 160+ miles in the process. The first rider started at 5AM, and the last finished at just after midnight. AMAZING!
I'm really psyched for the three Stage 1 riders who completed the entire challenge - amazing accomplishment Brooks, Jimmy, and Thomas! I am equally proud of all the other teammates who took part, some hitting a full century (yeah Robbie!), others just stopping by to ride or run a few laps to encourage the riders, and others just there to cheer, pass off water, and support the Stage 1 family.
We also had some amazing achievements by our junior squad, with the Nablo, Macauley, and Schmitz kids putting in some very hard miles, lap after lap, riding and enjoying the beautiful day, and of course pausing to remind people why we call them the Muddy Mayhem.
Heartfelt congratulations to all involved. I am truly honored to have you all as part of the team, and I'm really proud to have had my shop name rolling up and down the hill in so much strength and determination.
For the record, I drove the team van up and down the course once. It was harrowing, but I made it through in a similar display of intestinal fortitude. It wasn't quite the 160+ mile effort that other put in, but still, I don't think "hero" is too strong a word to describe my efforts.
Thanks to Allison Scott, Ben Burkey, and Anthony Vecca for the great pictures! ...
And again, this was a part of the CCAP Breakaway Benefit, supporting youth cycling in Connecticut. If you are able and willing to support their work, you can make donations here: www.pledgereg.com/260280?fbclid=IwAR3oN-ZxFm0MJZNA1ft6UX89IdtP_HH2Fr60B09lVicjWxGCqWO-cYQ8aDg
Proud to be part of this amazing bike family! Such great role models for the Jrs!
Awesome achievements (especially you, Brian 😆)!!!
Awesomeness right there guys!
It's a fine day today, so why not ride up Everest? Best of luck to my Stage 1 riders who are attempting the Everest challenge today - they have 24 hours to climb 29,029 feet on bicycle. The route they have chosen is a two mile loop, and they'll need to ride almost 70 laps to reach the elevation goal.
Our annual "Super Happy Fun Ride", in comparison, covers 8000' of climbing in 80 miles, and regularly breaks some very accomplished cyclists, so this challenge attempt is pretty amazing stuff.
This lunacy is in support of our fine friends at the CCAP, who do so much for youth cycling in Connecticut. See the comments below for a link to donate if you are able. ...
Couple jrs climbing Everest
Brooks Nablo it was great to ride a lap with you. I think you were at 68 miles in you looked so strong. It was midpoint on a century so that’s my excuse for not joining in on the insanity. Good luck all!
Best wishes to all the riders!

Howdy folks - with about 30 new bikes arriving yesterday and needing to be built, a non-stop flood of repairs, and it also being exam week, we are absurdly busy. Thank you for your patience as we get your repairs and new bike builds done as quickly as possible.
For the next few days, we won't be able to do any on the spot repairs, and if your shopping can wait till Friday or Saturday, we will be much better staffed and ready to help then.
Also, if you call and it goes to voicemail, I promise that we will call you back. When we are busy with multiple customers all at once, we sometimes just can't catch every call. I can assure you we are not ignoring the phone, just trying to help the fine folks who are physically in the store.
Thank you! ...
Wow!! I am debating about either a specialized or giant hybrid. I’m a tall guy. About 6 feet 3 inches. When will you officially open so I can test drive?
Wonderful to see you thriving in the village!
Awesome!!!! This makes this family very happy for you!!
...."We're going to need a bigger boat!"
U need a hand wrenching ? Will work for sammich !
NO Plow King you don’t need a new bike!! 🤣🤣
Got any lady mountain bikes in that pile? Liv/Norco?

Hello AirLine nation! Sorry for the long radio silence - we've been crazy busy turning wrenches, building bikes, and trying to keep as many people out having fun on two wheels as possible, and we haven't had much time for social media.
With that said, we are here, still doing curbside repair intake, and allowing one or two customers into the store at once for safe responsible socially distant shopping. We will have a handful of fresh used bikes out in the rack on Saturday, and new bikes arrive almost daily to keep replenishing our stock.
With that said, we have a number of shop friends looking for nice used kids bikes, particularly 20" and 24" bikes with gears, maybe even a 16" bike or two with training wheels. If you have something like that, bike shop quality, which you would like to trade in or sell, please bring it by the shop and we'll make a deal! ...
Good morning quarantiners!
I know most folks are probably itching to get outside after a very rainy day yesterday... But today is NOT the day to head out mountain biking, please. The trails need a day or more to recover and dry out.
However, this is a perfect day to get out and HIKE your favorite trails, and toss as many sticks out of the way as you can. The trails are likely littered with fallen debris, and will need to be cleared. If you come across any big fallen trees across the trail, please let me know and I'll alert the proper authorities.
This is also a great day to leave the horses at home. The eight inch deep post holes that horses would create today leave hazards for all other trail users for months.
These trails are getting more traffic than ever before, so the need to treat them well is more important than ever! ...
On behalf of the AirLine Cycles family and the Stage 1 Cycling club, I wish a happy Easter and a continued happy Passover to all. I hope this beautiful picture is a reminder that even in difficult times, there are still some beautiful skies and lots of love in the world if you know where to look for it.
Thanks to junior team riders Mckenna and Lilly for sending some two-wheeled love out into the world, and thanks to coach Melanie Jordan for taking and sharing this great photo. ...
On behalf of the entire AirLine family, we wish all our Jewish friends and family a very happy Passover. Hopefully between Zoom, Skype, Facetime, (and the many other technologies I don't understand) you can still connect with family and friends during these difficult days and make the most of the celebration.
chag Pesach samech! ...
I assure you we're open! We continue to fix flat tires and tune bikes as quickly as we can. Please understand that we are doing our best, and we will get your bike back to you as quickly as possible.
At this time, we are forced to discontinue the on the fly while you wait repairs. We can generally get flat tire repairs or quick adjustments back to you within a few hours, but for the near future, we will be decon'ing every bike at the curb and allowing it to dry before conducting any repairs inside the shop. The retail area is still open by appointment.
We only have one phone line, so if you get a busy signal, please call back or send an email to email@example.com. We will do our best to get back to you as quickly as possible. ...
Today's photo challenge: with so much news about state parks being too crowded, I'd like to see as many pictures as possible at a state forest! Tag us in a picture of your kid in front of a brown and yellow state forest sign for a chance to win $1.3 million dollars and/or an AirLine Cycles waterbottle. Thanks to Ms. Erica for today's photo idea.
Shop is open 10-4 today for repairs and purchases. Six foot distancing is required. Curb side pickup is strongly encouraged. All credit card transactions will be typed in manually so that no one has to touch the machine. Be safe, be well! ...
Photo Contest, Day 15: It is a wheelie nice day today kids, so get out there and take some pictures of you putting that front wheel way up in the air. Bonus points for style, location, funny faces, etc.
Tomorrow, the weather is looking a bit rainy, so many folks will be stuck inside. If you're ready to try this ZWIFT indoor smart trainer thing, I have two CycleOps/Saris M2 (MSRP $599) smart trainers still in stock; these things are sold out everywhere until May at least, but I have two available. One is new in the box, $599. The other has been used on the floor as a demo a few times, still brand new with full warranty, $550!
(Photo credit to some unknown friend of Brooks who is probably looking on with a mixture of respectful awe and some irritation at how comfortable this dude is on one wheel and/or in the air.) ...
Special anniversary edition of the AirLine Kids Photo Hunt Spectacular, day 14 of the weeklong challenge: Special challenge today kids: Today, I need you to ride at your favorite place, and take a picture at your favorite spot of all, and after your ride, I need you to eat a giant bowl of ice cream. Post a picture of you with that ice cream and your bike, and tag it #RideLikeDave
Have a beautiful day everybody! ...
See below for 1) Scavenger photo hunt and 2) new shop procedures. Thanks!
1) Hey kids, see this sign? It is an orienteering marker, and there are a bunch of them hung up all over Hurd park. Today's photo hunt is to get your picture with as many as you can find!
2) We have shifted to a closed door policy at the shop. It breaks my heart to do so, but it's what we need to do at this stage. If you need a repair, please either knock at the door, or lock your bike up on the rack out front with the provided cable locks, and then give us a call and let us know what it needs!
Thank you for your understanding!
Together we will get through this difficult time! ...
You know what's scary? Global pandemic.
You know what's not scary? The new $10 AirLine Cycles t-shirts!
That's $10 out the door, tax included! It's all about the Hamiltons baby!
These shirts won't help you find toilet paper, avoid this rotten COVID19, or help you survive trapped in a house with those kids of yours, but they do look great, and they are $10. Brown or navy with hot pink ink, or black or pink with blue ink. Ten bucks!
Shop is open 10-4 on Saturday. Pull up to the curb, shout out your size and color, and we'll toss one your direction.
All repair pickup and drop off will be outside for the near future. Give a call on the phone, or yell at us from the door, and we'll come get your information. Please be patient, as the new process takes a bit of extra time.
We will get through this together! ...
Thanks to @T-Shirts Etc tseink.com/ in Glastonbury for the great service and awesome pricing. I could have saved $0.50 a shirt buying online, but instead I helped a family owned local business stay open. I urge you all to shop locally and support your friends and neighbors especially now in these difficult times!
